Cherry season!

Strawberry season is tapering off, so the strawberries are bigger (better for dipping, less easy to just pop in your mouth, less tasty) but cherry season is getting going!

I came home with a half-flat of strawberries (six little baskets) and six pints of cherries, plus a large number of apricots.

Large white plastic bowl filled with dark and light red cherries, with a strawberry or two on top.

Last week I ran short of fruit, and had to get some more midway through the week. Fresher, but I'd been hoping to do fewer shopping runs. Alas.

Heh, it's still so weird to think of strawberry season being almost over in the Bay when I was chatting with one of my local farmers, and he promised the first strawberries of the season would arrive to market on Wednesday. Any stone fruit is still at least a month away; for the most part here, it's asparagus, green garlic/ramps, fiddleheads, and leafy greens.

Oh, totally. I could pick up the gargantuan flavor-reduced ones at the supermarket here (California strawberries show up there nearly year-round), but especially with berries and other similarly delicate fruits, I'm convinced breeding in durability to make that sort of journey breeds out the taste. They'll be okay for cooking-type purposes, but around here, MA-grown will beat CA-grown-and-flown for taste every time.

(I do hope there's still some strawberries at market when I'm in SF at the end of the month :) )
